- W2591162139 abstract "This chapter outlines the factors that determine the decision on whether to screw-retain or cement a restoration. Screw retention allows the restoration to be removed for repair, prosthetic modifications, or soft tissue inspection, and creates access for hygiene if required. A screw-retained restoration will have a screw access hole, which disrupts the structural continuity of the porcelain, leaving some unsupported porcelain at the screw access hole. In a cement-retained restoration there are no screw access holes that may interfere with occlusal stops or excursive movements. Incomplete removal of cement may result in peri-implant inflammation, soft tissue swelling, bleeding, and/or suppuration and eventual resorption of peri-implant bone. Provisional restorations may be used for immediate loading, as well as to achieve better aesthetics by developing a proper emergence profile by guiding soft tissue contours during healing. Lateral set-screws have been developed in an attempt to overcome the problems of unpredictable retention and retrievability of implant restorations." @default.
