- W259288497 abstract "KURDS The Kurdish National Movement: Its Origins and Development, by Wadie Jwaideh. Foreword by Martin van Bruinessen. Syracuse, NY: Syracuse University Press, 2006. xx + 295 pages. Appendix to p. 300. Notes to p. 375. Gloss, to p. 379. Bibl. to p. 395. Index to p. 419. $45 paper. Reviewed by Michael M. Gunter Long hailed as classic study of Kurdish nationalism since it was first written as doctoral dissertation almost half century ago, Wadie Jwaideh's seminal work has finally been published posthumously for much larger audience to appreciate. (This much-belated occurrence reminds one of Martin van Bruinessen's famous Agha, Shaikh and State: The Social and Political Structures of Kurdistan, doctoral dissertation accepted in 1978 also was available in only limited quantities until it was finally published in 1992.) Wadie Jwaideh was born in Basra, Iraq in an Arabic-speaking, Christian family. He obtained law degree in Baghdad in 1942, and then served in Ministry of Interior as an inspector of supply for northern provinces. This position enabled him to travel extensively through Kurdish region where he came to know land and people. Later, he immigrated to United States where he founded and taught in Department of Near Eastern Languages and Literatures at Indiana University until his retirement in 1987. He died in 2001. Although so much since has occurred and been written about Kurds, Jwaideh still presents valuable, richly detailed analysis of earlier developments, while also offering helpful background from which better to fathom current events. His study aptly shows how powerful and deep historical roots of Kurdish nationalism are, dismissing claim earlier Kurdish uprisings were only isolated tribal disturbances. Fifty years ago, Jwaideh presciently wrote separated by impassable mountain barriers, divided by linguistic and sectarian differences, rent by narrow tribal loyalties, and split up by international frontiers, they [the Kurds] yearn to be what other more fortunate peoples are - nation-state (p. xi). Indeed, he even argued, that Kurds were aware of their nationality as far back as 12th century is attested to by maneuvering led to election of Salah al-Din to vizierate (p. 291). Although antiquity of Kurdish nationalism can be debated, Jwaideh himself lived long enough to see it grow, especially in northern Iraq. According to Jwaideh, purpose of his study is to discover whether there is a Kurdish nationality with highly developed national consciousness...strong enough to say there is Kurdish national movement...and what is relation of this national movement to international politics in Middle East (p. xvi). To do this, author divides his work into 16 chapters. After an analysis of geographical, historical, cultural, and social background and organization of Kurds, author examines events of 19th century including suppression of emirates or semiautonomous Kurdish principalities (p. 62) and career of Shaykh Ubayd Allah (Sheikh Ubeydullah) of Nehri. He then turns to impact of Young Turk Revolution, where he noted the various nationalisms, long dormant or silent, were suddenly awakened and became articulate. …" @default.
