- W2593651984 abstract "Climate change is one of the most significant problems that human society is facing at the 21C. Climate change is more than just an environmental issue but a complicated problem that has impact on the economy, society and politics all around the globe. Global warming and Urban Heat island effect have made the unique characteristic of urban climate. High temperature that urban spaces have, leads to increased rate of illness and death due to heat stress. Deleterious phenomena such as Heat waves, hot and humid nights, localized heavy rains are all consequences of urban climate change. Urban temperature is known to be affected by the earth's surface, heat emitted by human activities and air quality and also the urban structure. Factors such as the extent of green space, asphalt pavement, the mass of buildings and volume of traffic have influence on the urban climate. Since the physical characteristic of a city affects the urban temperature, it is important to learn the mechanism; moreover, figure out the urban form that has less impact on the climate. Accomplishing sustainability has been the key goal of urban planning theories since the 1970s, when human impact on the environment became a global issue. Compact City theory was proposed as an alternative to the defects of conventional urban development; urban sprawl. Its main concept is to prevent the sprawl and secure urban open space and green land by highdensity mix-used urban core. These features of Compact City are expected to achieve energy efficiency through decreased driving distance and increased use of public transportation. However, the actual effects of Compact City characteristics are still open to dispute, and being verified by many researchers. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between urban temperature and urban spatial structure, focused on the compactness of the city. To do this, first of all, literature search of preceding researches about urban temperature and Compact City theory has been done. As next, this study analyzed the relations of temperature and compactness of 24 small-medium sized cities in Korea on 15years period (1996-2010) using STATA's Panel Data Model Analysis. The result shows that urban temperature rise at the increasing rate of building sites, and falls at the increase of net density, meaning that compact urban structure can help reduce the rising air temperature in the city." @default.
