- W2594539191 abstract "This chapter tries to distinguish the phenomenon of legged locomotion from the mechanisms responsible, while also identifying the main mechanisms utilized. The dynamic nature of locomotion means that all features of limb function change in some way over the course of the stride. Utilization of the limb by any particular species in either a predominantly strut-like or lever-like manner is likely determined by the functional requirements involved with the locomotory task required. Two fundamental mechanisms are available to reduce the mechanical cost of locomotion for a wide range of terrestrial animals: a pendulum-like exchange that characterizes walking gaits; and a bounce-like exchange seen in running gaits. The chapter provides a comparison of ground reaction forces for the human, dog and horse at three gaits: walk, run/trot, and skip/gallop. Potential-kinetic energy exchange occurs in both brachiation and terrestrial legged locomotion." @default.
