- W2594781604 abstract "The formation of clusters and nanoparticles in the gas phase under non-equilibrium conditions can be used to create objects with unique physical and chemical properties that cannot be reached by other techniques. In order to conserve those properties during deposition and to select only particles with a certain number of atoms and specific properties, or even to improve those properties before or during deposition, a number of experimental techniques are nowadays are nowadays available. These techniques cover the whole scenario from soft-landing, selection of particles within a well-defined mass or size regime by electrostatic and/or magnetic filtering units up to in-flight modification by thermal annealing, chemical treatment and coating processes. Even during soft-landing deposition, the structure and electronic properties may be influenced just by contact formation with the substrate. The properties of the cluster-on-surface systems can be significantly altered by varying the kinetic energy of the particles as well as the substrate temperature or by preparation of rare gas buffer layers. Finally, post-deposition thermal treatments allow further modifications of the specific physical and chemical properties." @default.
