- W2595224102 abstract "IntroductionThe quality of nursing research supervision is one of the key factors in time-to-completion and academic throughputs. Quality supervision is a multi-faceted phenomenon relying on the supervisor's ability to transfer knowledge and skills to the student, induct the student into the research community, and guide the student towards professional, academic and intra- or interpersonal growth. Research supervision requires a balance between time and demands with the main purpose being the timely completion of a quality product - a dissertation or thesis - that contributes to the body of knowledge (Maxwell & Smyth 2011, Holtman & Mukwada 2014).Supervisors with little or no structured supervision development or experience often get to supervise postgraduate students (Ismail et al. 2011). The initial supervision is often a trial-and-error situation. The skills to become supervisors of postgraduate students are developed in different ways. The expectations are often that researchers who have completed a master's or doctoral degree themselves, will be able to supervise students in completing similar degrees. Although some supervisors are strongly influenced by their own experience of being supervised, supervision skills are not a common outcome of completion of own studies. Supervisors may repeat, or wilfully avoid what their supervisors did; this may not necessarily result in effective supervisory practice (Deuchar 2008, Hammond et al. 2010, Ismail et al. 2011). Others ask their colleagues for guidance while some rely on their own understanding and interpretation of what supervision is about (Amundsen & McAlpine 2009, Lee 2008).Nursing research supervision holds its own challenges. It is imperative to develop research capacity in nursing by increasing the number of nurses holding higher degrees. Research supervision is a critical component in ensuring nurses enrolled for postgraduate studies complete their research projects (Abigail & Hill 2015, Severinsson 2015). In South Africa, for example, postgraduate nursing students come from diverse backgrounds in relation to research experience and academic writing skills (van Wyk et al. 2015). A range of approaches are required to successfully supervise nursing students who enter the postgraduate program from different clinical environments, with diverse levels of competency. A supervisor who is aware of different approaches is more likely to adapt the approach most suitable to the student's needs (Bruce & Stoodley 2013). Novice supervisors may follow a single kind of process for all students. Expert supervisors seem to observe students in relation to competence, determination and context. Such supervisors adapt their research strategies in terms of division of responsibilities, balancing critical feedback and sympathy and setting expectations for quality (de Kleijn et al. 2014:13).In the current climate of accountability and pressure to enhance postgraduate research outputs, tremendous pressure falls on supervisors to guide completion of postgraduate studies and produce academic publications. To develop expertise in supervision in an ever-changing and demanding external environment, universities should give more attention to the development of supervisors. (McCallin & Nayar 2012). Baptista (2011:3580) writes that ... it is essential that doctoral education, research and supervision are regularly rethought, and that perspectives and findings are shared to stimulate an engaged debate regarding this subject.Concluding that the training and professional development of supervisors should be a priority, the authors of this article conducted an integrative literature review to resolve some of the challenges they had experienced as supervisors of postgraduate nursing students. The understanding obtained with regards to the research supervision process and the roles and responsibilities of research supervisors was used to develop a toolkit to enhance effective postgraduate research supervision. …" @default.
