Thesis, Surakarta: Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Sebelas Maret University, October 2016 This research aimed (1) to describe the student’s needs and interest in ability of grateful skill development; (2) to provide Prototype-1 of service guidance to improve student’s gratitude skills with metaphors technique in Senior High School (SHS). The subject of research were SHS students throughout Surakarta Residency in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. This study employed Borg and Gall’s research and development design. This stage only reached the pre-development stage, pro-duct development. The data were collected by using student’s needs and interest questionnaire to find out the student’s needs and interest levels. The data analysis was conducted by using factorial analysis and percentage analysis and ranking. The factorial data analysis was used to validate the instrument. The percentage analysis and ranking were used to find out the student of Senior High School’s needs and interest level, in student’s, parent’s, and school counselor’s perspectives. The results of this research were as follows. First, there were student’s needs and interest in improve ability of gratitude development in students’, parents and school counselor’s perspectives, by considering the results of theoretical and empirical studies. The results of theoretical studies on ability of gratitude included the definition of gratitude, the form of gratitude, and the indicators of gratitude. The results of empirical studies contained the result of survey revealing that 2500 respondents (75,60%) that highly needed and 2500 respondents (76,00%) felt grati-tude skill development as very important in students’s, parents and school coun-selor’s perspectives. Secondly, considering the result of preliminary studies analy-sis and theoretical studies, a product could be developed in the form of Service Guidance to Improve Student’s Gratitude Skills with Metaphors Technique in Senior High School.
