- W2595366927 abstract "Since the publication of our recent article “Epidural Lysis of Adhesions for Failed Back Surgery and Spinal Stenosis: Factors Associated with Treatment Outcome,” we have received several comments on our article.1 In reviewing these comments, we would like to offer several corrections. The abstract states: “while higher baseline numerical rating scale pain scores were associated with a negative outcome (mean 6.7 years…”). The units are not years. The units are points on the 0–10 numerical pain rating scale. On page 218, we state “Confidence intervals (CIs) were provided for some variables with nonsignificant P values to show the reliability of estimates.” This isn’t quite right. The confidence intervals provide the range of estimates but do not provide information on the reliability of the estimates. We did not implement statistical corrections to adjust the level of significance for multiple comparisons. As a result, our reported P values only measure the strength of associations, not the familywise error rate. Even findings labeled “statistically significant” should be considered exploratory. Table 3 lists the P value of catheter usage as a predictor of outcome as 0.04, using the Fisher exact test. This is not correct. The correct value is 0.06. Page 221 describes the influence of a navigable catheter on patient outcome (“The use of a navigable catheter…”). The 95% confidence intervals do not include 1, suggesting a significant influence on outcome. This is reflected in our text. However, the P value does not suggest statistical significance (P > 0.05). It is known that the GLM function in R may result in confidence bounds inconsistent with the P value.2 We have repeated the calculation using the fisher.test function. The sentence should be revised to state: “The use of a navigable catheter showed no association with outcome in either the univariable analysis (OR, 0.15; 95% CI, 0.003–1.3; P = 0.06) or in the multivariable analysis (P = 0.16).” We apologize for the errors. We hope this clarifies the analysis of our study results." @default.
