- W259566752 abstract "The project encompasses the design, construction, and operation of the Wilton, Maine, municipal wastewater treatment plant. The basic concept of the design is to minimize the requirements for off-site energy sources. Since the stream receiving the treated effluent is small and vulnerable to drought conditions, provisions had to be made for handling the effluent during extremely low stream-flow conditions. The facility is privately operated by the community. Approximately 800 households and businesses will be connected to the system. The most significant innovation that reduces the requirements for offsite energy is the application of solar energy, used as an integral part of the wastewater treatment process. Flat plate hydronic solar collector panels covering 1500 sq ft set at a 60 degree slope form that south roof of the treatment plant. An anti-freeze solution will be pumped through these panels and heated from 120 to 140 degrees by the sun. Although this solar energy is used to heat the building and the hot water supply, its primary purpose is to provide heat for the anaerobic digesters. In this small facility, the methane produced may be stored for use in heating the building and running the electric generator, since it will not bemore » required to heat the digester. The integration of its architecture, landscaping, and natural terrain makes for an impressive structure. (MCW)« less" @default.
