- W259596585 abstract "This year ITEA celebrates its 20th anniversary as a member organization of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). NCATE, the teaching profession's accrediting body, was founded as a non-profit, non-governmental accrediting body in 1954 by five groups: the National School Boards Association, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the Council of Chief State School Officers, the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, and the National Education Association. These organizations represented the education field in 1954. Through the next half century, the various teaching disciplines grew as separate organizations. Associations of those teaching professionals, including ITEA, joined NCATE one by one to help ensure quality in the preparation of teachers for our nation's schools. NCATE is now sustained by 33 member organizations, including ITEA, which represent the entire education profession and millions of Americans that have come together to strengthen quality in teacher preparation. NCATE has established rigorous standards for high quality educator preparation. The agency implements a performance-based accreditation system in which colleges of education provide evidence that their candidates know the subject matter they plan to teach and are able to teach it effectively so that students learn. As a part of accreditation expectations, institutions must develop an assessment system that collects and analyzes data on applicant qualifications, and on candidate and graduate performance, and they use that information to improve their programs. NCATE accredits 614 institutions. These institutions produce two-thirds of the nation's new teacher graduates. Approximately one hundred more institutions are in candidacy. These institutions use NCATE's standards to help ensure quality in the entire college of education, including all programs that prepare educators to work in schools from preschool through high school. NCATE's standards include the program standards of 20 disciplines, such as ITEA's standards for technology teachers. NCATE, the states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia work together in tandem through 50 State/NCATE Partnerships to increase the rigor of teacher preparation and streamline the process. Through the partnerships, institutions can accomplish professional accreditation and state approval simultaneously. The partnerships have helped integrate state standards with national professional standards. NCATE's 50 state partners have adopted NCATE's national professional content standards (i.e. ITEA standards) or have closely aligned their state content standards with those standards. This means that the ITEA standards have greatly influenced standards for technology teachers across the nation. ITEA's Active Participation in NCATE's Accreditation Process Four policy boards, composed of representatives of the 33 member associations, set NCATE's direction through development of standards and accreditation policies. ITEA member Gene Martin, Professor, College of Education, Texas State University, sits on NCATE's Specialty Areas Studies Board, which develops NCATE policy for recognition of program standards in the NCATE system. NCATE has over 500 trained evaluators on its Board of Examiners who apply NCATE's standards during onsite visits to institutions. The following ITEA members are currently trained as on-site evaluators and make onsite visits: E. …" @default.
