The volume of writing has increased, but even more noticeably the range of investigative lenses, sources, and topics has broadened. Growing doubts have been expressed about the traditional view that social studies was suddenly born from progressive-era committee proposals; instead, scholars have placed greater weight on evolution from earlier curricula as well as construction and adaptation of actual programs, particularly during the interwar decades. Heightened concern for pluralism problematized longstanding verities of the field such as citizenship. Nonetheless few of any aforementioned historical studies are based on evidence from curriculum enactment. The same holds true for the fate of proposals on pluralism, which gained curricular legitimacy by the 1970s, and for investigations of the effects of the more recent standards and accountability movement.
