- W25962085 abstract "This chapter discusses the development of behavior in humans. The development of behavior is influenced by a complex interaction of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. In some cases, a single gene is responsible for a major change in behavioral development. This allows the physiological mechanism of the genetic influence to be analyzed and can, in turn, suggest strategies for correcting genetically based behavioral disorders by changing the environment. For example, the severe mental retardation associated with phenylketonuria is caused by a single gene defect in phenylalanine metabolism. The retardation can be largely prevented if the disease is detected early and the child is placed on a low phenylalanine diet. Development of sexual morphology and behavior are influenced by hormones, particularly androgens, during early development. Environmental stimulation during critical periods of development may also have profound effects on behavioral development." @default.
