- W2596256016 abstract "The focus of this research project is the management of technology transfers in multinational corporations (MNCs). We argue that the management of international technology transfers depends on the transfer directions. Transfer directions can be distinguished in transfers from headquarters to foreign subsidiaries (called forward .technology transfer (FTT)) and back from foreign subsidiaries to headquarters (called reverse technology transfer (RTT)). One of the key results of the study is that the use of coordination mechanisms indeed differs according to the transfer direction and that the benefit of each coordination mechanism depends on its quantitative use. Therefore, it is important for managers to know that these transfer projects have common elements but also differences which should be considered in transfer projects. The most intensively used coordination mechanisms for FTT are (1) informal communication, (2) personal contacts, and (3) visits between employees. On the other hand (1) in-house fairs, (2) video conferences and (3) temporary task forces are little used. For RTT (1) personal contacts, (2) informal communication, and (3) permanent teams are used most intensively. In the context of this transfer direction (1) in-house fairs, (2) video conferences, and (3) training of employees play a minor role. (1) Personal contacts, (2) visits between employees, and (3) permanent teams contribute most to the success of FTT. The highest benefit for RTT projects results from (1) personal contacts, (2) informal communication, and (3) informal meetings. For both transfer directions (1) in-house fairs, (2) video conferences, and (3) formal reporting systems have the lowest benefit for the success of a technology transfer project. A general result of the study is that person-oriented coordination mechanisms are more crucial for the success of RTT than technocratic coordination mechanisms." @default.
