We can observe a real semantic work around the notions of “blessed city” and “holy city,” based on the concretion of narratives produced in the seventeenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries by local past and present Islamic scholars, colonial administration officers, Malian civil servants, ethnographers, journalists, and even UNESCO, which classified the Old Towns of Jenne as a World Heritage Site in 1988. The exemplary urban civilization of the city, its historical permanence, effects of memory, historical records, baraka, lists of saints, students and intimates of the Prophet Muhammad, and its heavenly postulate are as many resources that Jenne’s people mobilize in Islamic but also non-religious knowledge to make Jenne a “holy city.”" @default.
