By Dave Thompson. Milwaukee: Backbeat Books, 2014. ISBN 978-1-61713-572-9. $27.99 Sound Man. By Glyn Johns. New York: Penguin/Blue Rider, 2014. ISBN 978-0-39916387-6. $27.95 From 1968 through 1980, the rock music juggernaut Led Zeppelin ran rampant through American blues and Anglo folk music. Although its members were British, its main audiences were in America, where at the height of the band's fame (1973--1977) fans packed sports stadiums for concerts lasting three hours or more. To play that long, the band had to perform not just their hit songs, but whole (or nearly whole) hit albums, especially Led Zeppelin II (1969), the untitled fourth album aka Led Zeppelin IV (1971, that included Stairway to Heaven), and Houses of the Holy (1972). Since its drummer John Bonham's untimely death in 1980 and its ensuing breakup, Led Zeppelin's ten albums remain in print; a refurbished set of reissues on CD and vinyl LP were released in 2014-- 2015. Dave Lewis's From a Whisper to a Scream updates his Led Zeppelin: The Complete Guide To Their Music (Omnibus Press, 2010), reporting on the canonical ten albums, the subsequent official anthologies and DVDs, and presenting a smattering of unauthorized bootleg recordings of concerts and studio outtakes. By itself, it may be a tad too slim, but it does provide a basic discographic ground to Lewis' other Led Zeppelin books and his magazine on the band, Tight but Loose. One feature of Lewis' guide is the subsection for live performances of each song, whether it was performed and on which occasions or tours; for specific concert recordings where a song performance was preserved, it is best to consult the Songs and Must Hear sidebar of the website The Year of Led Zeppelin (http://www.theyearofledzeppelin.com/, accessed 16 July 2015). In addition to the ill-fated drummer Bonham, the other members of Led Zeppelin were guitarist, producer and musical leader Jimmy Page, bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones, and singer Robert Plant. At the time of the band's founding in 1968, compared to the seasoned recording session pros Page and Jones, Bonham and Plant were newbies, whom Page hired from the provincial music scene in the British midlands. Their popularity skyrocketed faster and higher than anyone's greatest expectations. To Plant's credit, he developed into one of the most dominant frontmen in rock, and also into one of the most resourceful rock singers when his voice wore down and changed during the 1970s. Essentially, Plant gave up his youthful 20s for Led Zeppelin, and even by 1980 it was too late for him to exact from the rest of the band what he had sacrificed to them. How Plant avoided giving up in like manner his 30s, 40s, 50s, and now his 60s, is the theme of Dave Thompson's biography. The challenge for any biographer is to affirm the high artistic achievements that Plant has attained by himself since 1980 while not letting them seem dim by comparison to the Zeppelin years. Thompson's solution is to split Plant's life into 18 chapters, the first nine to 1980, the second nine since then. Then he reorganizes the chapters in such a way that his early life is contrasted with his mature life (10, 1, 11, 2, 12, 3, etc.): 1980-81, then 1948-61; 1981, then 1961-1965; and so forth until the final pairing of 2004-2013, then 1977-1980. This approach anchors our appreciation of Plant's mature artistry in his first two solo albums, Pictures at Eleven (1982) and The Principle of Moments (1983), and compares it with his pre-Zeppelin juvenilia recording sessions through 1968. …" @default.
