One of the important applications of MIFE is in protein sensing, for example, by using immunoassays. The Deep Purple (DP)-bovine serum albumin (BSA) fluorescent monolayer makes it possible to quantitatively compare the fluorescence intensity of fluorophore protein conjugates with and without various silver fractal nanostructures on silicon after background signal subtraction and correction for differences in surface coverage. The chapter demonstrates fluorescence enhancement on flat surface such as glass and silicon surfaces (two-dimensional (2D) surfaces), further investigates the feasibility of applying such methodology to 3D structures such as membranes, as detection and identification of low abundance biomarker proteins is frequently based on various types of membrane-based devices. It describes the preparation of silver nanostructure- coated silica microspheres and their characterization and applications in the flow cytometry bead immunoassay and cell imaging." @default.
