- W2598749450 abstract "Sharing economic resources can be a problem when the interests of the couple clash with the interests of kin or lineage, particulary for the wife. When parents give a dowry to daughters, they reduce their own financial situation and the future situation of their sons. But, during the Old Regime, Norman custom was stipulating the exclusion of endowed daughters from land inheritance to preserve the interests of the male lineage, because land was the essential element of patrimony in rural society before the Industrial Revolution. Studying the Norman dowry system, this paper means to explore the tensions (or outright conflict) between the economic interests of daughters and the economic interests of their families, especially their male lineage. We analyse marriage contracts in two Norman regions (the first one, around Vernon, is near to Paris; the second one, around Pont-L’Eveque, is near to the sea), before and after the French Revolution because the new law (Civil Code) changed the rules of inheritance (daughters can inherit). Then we can understand if the central goal of the dowry system was to protect family patrimony and to prevent this patrimony from shrinking, or not. It seems that, after the Revolution, Norman people didn’t try to preserve old practices as dowry system; they accepted the common settlement because they wanted to take care of their spouse before thinking to their kin interests." @default.
