- W2599016875 abstract "Bedrock-alluvial channels are present within most river networks, and therefore sediment transport and deposition processes within these channels will influence network-scale sediment fluxes. This chapter first considers the advances that have been made in research into sediment processes in bedrock-alluvial rivers since 2010. Studies are separated along two dimensions; the methodological approach and the temporal and spatial scale of the study. This analysis finds that key advances have been made in the areas of grain-dynamics, sediment cover formation and measurements of channel evolution. There is still a notable paucity of flow data, which is crucial for understanding sediment processes. A range of outstanding research questions and some possible approaches to addressing these questions are then considered. The chapter then presents the application of a numerical model of sediment dynamics to address one of the identified questions; namely how sediment cover responds to temporally varying sediment supply. The model demonstrates two different regimes: under moderately variable sediment supply, sediment cover is comparable to that produced by constant sediment supply indicating the importance of grain-scale processes; under extremely variable supply, the channel mainly alternates between full and no sediment cover in response to the timing of sediment inputs.
