- W2599173325 abstract "IntroductionAccording to Long (2008), it is estimated that the NYC police arrest about 100 suspects annually for impersonating an officer. It is believed that some impersonate police to commit crimes or take drugs and money from drug dealers. On the other hand, some lay reports have described impersonators as manipulators with hero complexes. There have been infamous cases of criminals, and even regular citizens, impersonating a police officer. For instances, two such cases include the U.S. serial killer John Wayne Gacy who used a police badge and even mounted lights on top of his car to simulate a police cruiser. Another significant noteworthy occurrence involved hit men posing as police, arresting and then killing rival gang members during the Saint Valentine's Day massacre. Extremes of such behavior have even included a February 11, 2007 Fox News story where a man impersonated a police officer, complete with a uniform, handcuffs, mounting a siren and light on his car, and even brought suspects to a self-constructed police station where he would interrogate them.Berrell (2013) a forensic psychologist states that there are two types of individuals who impersonate officers. The first type of impersonator has antisocial motives to enter a home or car for a robbery, or for a sexual assault. The second type he calls disturbed with feelings of inadequacy where may feel inadequate, with no authority or power, and they can relate to cops because they see them as the ideal of what a man should be; however they go too far.. .they don't distinguish between reality and fantasy.Clinical experience suggests that there are numerous adults with a Intellectual Disability (someone who has an IQ below 70 with adaptive functioning deficits evidenced during the developmental period) who wear police paraphernalia because they look up to police officers or have family members who are officers. In this way, the wearing of parts of a uniform and associating with family member's colleagues may be the closest that they come to carrying on the family tradition of being an officer; for these individuals wearing police paraphernalia provides them with a positive identity. The second type of adult, who impersonates an officer, includes someone with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (some who evidences restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests, and deficits in communication and socialization that are present during the developmental period) who has a heightened and fixated abnormal interest in police. These individuals will wear uniforms, act like police officers, and even engage in dangerous or criminal acts to have contact with police. Basically, these behaviors may be policeattention seeking in function. Clinical experience also suggests that for these two types of individuals, they dress or act like police mainly within their community residences or institutional settings. The actual impersonation of a police officer, both while wearing a uniform and carrying out police functions, in actual police emergencies is a rare occurrence for this population of adults with a developmental disability. The present case is particularly noteworthy because it is the first case known to this author of an adult with intellectual disability engaging in the criminal impersonation of a police officer during police emergencies in the community.Case StudyMr. Q parents died when he was young. Subsequently, he was taken in by an adopted family. Due to having a bad temper which frequently led to arrests, he was asked to move to another state. At the age of 12, he reported that he became depressed and attempted to run into a street and get run over by a car. On another occasion, he tried to cut his throat but his adopted sister intervened and he was hospitalized. He was frequently non-compliance with treatment except for taking medication for hyperactive behaviors. At 18 years of age, he and a friend were involved in a car accident, and suffered minor injuries with accompanying fears and nightmares. …" @default.
