- W2599541716 abstract "The phenomenon of sensitization enhancing usually stimulantbehavioral response to repeatedly administered drugs of abusehas been described both in laboratory animals and human beings. There is also data available confirming a cross-sensitizationbetween different types of drugs of abuse supporting furtherthe hypothesis that repeated use of one drug of abuse mayfacilitate the consumption of other drugs. Previously weconfirmed the sensitization to methamphetamine (MET)stimulatory effect on locomotor/exploratory behavior, and alsoto its inhibitory influence on aggression in mice. Furthermore, such sensitization was present in mice cross-sensitized withcannabinoid methanandamide (CAN). Our experiences withbehavioral as well as immunological profiles of differentcannabinoids received in our collaborative studies with Israelcolleagues (Mechoulam R., Fride E.) gave rise to the presentstudy comparing cross-sensitization with CAN to behavioral METeffects with their influences on immune function of leukocytes- phagocytic activity. Not only the behavioral sensitization toMET antiaggressive effects in aggressive singly-housed malemice on paired interactions with non-aggressive group-housedpartners but also to inhibitory influence on leukocytephagocytosis were registered in the present study whenchallenge doses were given several days apart from thepre-treatment with 5 daily doses of MET. In the sameexperimental design a cross-sensitization to the antiaggressiveefficacy of methamphetamine was found after 5 daily doses ofCAN. The 5 day treatment with CAN significantly increasedphagocytosis of zymosan by leukocytes in vitro, and did notcross-sensitized to MET 5 challenge doses given 9 days laterwhen the chemiluminometric curve signaling phagocytosis did notvary from the control one. These results confirm an interactionbetween the endocannabinoid system and MET brain mechanisms, and support further the hypothesis that repeated use ofcannabis may smooth the progress of intake of psychostimulantdrugs at least. Despite CA is reported as agonist with highaffinity at CB1 cannabinoid receptor localized mainly in theCNS it stimulated after repeated doses leukocyte phagocytosis, but did not cross-sensitized to MET suppressive effect on thisfunction." @default.
