- W2599777788 abstract "INTRODUCTIONIn 2007, one of the authors had been given an assignment to teach at a university in Istanbul, Turkey. One of the faculty members at the Istanbul university felt that American students (and other Americans) misunderstand Turkey and that caused them not to be predisposed to travel or study in Turkey. The American university professor felt the same about attitude and perception of Turkish students about the USA. A questionnaire was developed, validated and then administered to students at respective universities. A study, Students' Perception of Two Countries, was produced. One year later (2008), a professor whose roots were from Croatia thought it would be interesting to see how Croatian University students felt. The questionnaire was adapted and a professor from the University of Zagreb administered it to Faculty of Economics and Business students in 2008. This produced another study, Students' Attitudes: Croatia Versus Turkey. Then the authors wanted to see if there were any shifts in Croatian students' outlook between 2008 and 2010. The survey was administered again to the Faculty of Economics and Business students at the University of Zagreb. Having in mind the historical, religious, economic, cultural and ethnical differences between Croatia and neighboring Serbia it was wondered how students in Serbia might answer the survey, especially given Serbians' belief that US have interfered in their politics and caused present day suffering of the Serbians (Milic, 2003) and one of the lowest ratings in the world given to the USA/Americans in several Median Gallup Polls (Studies 2004, 2006 and 2009). The questionnaire was adapted for Serbian students and professor from the University of Belgrade administered the survey in 2010 to the Faculty of Economics students. This resulted in the current study which compares the Croatian 2010 study against the Croatian 2008 and the Serbian 2010 university studies.DEMOGRAPHICS AND EXPOSUREAs illustrated in Table 1, although Serbia's population is 1.6 times larger than Croatia's, Croatian per capita GDP is 1.6 times greater than Serbian. Both countries are fairly similar in terms of literacy and proportion of religious people, but Croats are mostly Roman Catholics and Serbs Orthodox Catholics.Data in Table 2 indicates that more Serbians, both in absolute terms and relative to the size of the population, have studied in the USA than Croatians during the last two school years. Given that only one or two dozen Americans studied in the Serbia, it is not surprising that the number of USA students doing studying in Croatia far exceeds the number of Americans studying in Serbia, both in absolute terms and relative to the size of the host population. It is worth noting that although the number of both Croatians and Serbians studying in the USA is increasing, the number of Americans studying in Croatia and especially in Serbia, given very small initial level, is growing much faster.According to data in Table 3, total numbers of visitors from Croatia and Serbia to USA and vice versa has substantially decreased between 2008 and 2010. While 13% decrease in number of travelers between Croatia and the USA was identical in both directions, 26% fewer Americans visited Serbia over those two years. These declines are most likely due to worsening of world-wide economic situation. Finding that 12 and 14 times more Americans visited Croatia than Serbia in 2008 and 2010, respectively, can be explained by well known attractions along Croatian Adriatic coast, including medieval walled city of Dubrovnik, and nearby site of apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Medjugoije, where Catholics from all over the world come on pilgrimage.Based on data in Tables 2 and 3 it is evident that Croatian students should have had much higher probability of exposure to USA citizens than Serbian students.DATA AND METHODOLOGYA questionnaire was designed and validated for a study, Students' Perception of Two Countries (Turkey and USA) - (Schnurr N. …" @default.
