- W2599926604 abstract "SHAKING HANDS WITH THE DEVIL. The Intersection of Terrorism and Theology, William J. Abraham, Highland Loch Press: Dallas, Texas, 2013, Pp. 189, $15.00. Reviewed by J. Harold Ellens.Professor Abraham was born in Ireland amidst the terrors of the IRA and the British Constabulary, so he knows about terrorism from the inside out. He is the Outler Professor of Wesley Studies and the Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor at Perkins School of Theology of Southern Methodist University. His present book is analysis of the relationship between theology and terrorism. He argues that in Ireland there was indirect relationship between them, but in the forms of Islamist terrorism the relationship is direct and phenomenally lethal. Islamist terrorism, in consequence, cannot really be understood without a full realization of the way in which theology and religion give rise to and sustain terrorism. Abraham moves to the key operational questions for ordinary people like us, i.e., questions about what the government should do to protect us, how should respond to terrorism on own, how to endure the profound evil forces at play in Islamist terrorism, and whether forgiveness has anything to do with how carry ourselves before the face of such evil. This volume has been called an eye-opener on terrorism . . . a rigorous theological response to the moral and spiritual challenges posed by one of the great evils of times. The author has structured the book in nine chapters: Massacre of the Innocents; Orange and Green; In the Name of God; Life is Short, Nasty, and Irish; Joes and Josephines; The War on Terror; The Paddy Factor; The F-Word; and The Evil We Face. Terrorism is the very nasty business of arbitrary violence against a few innocent people in order to intimidate and manipulate the targeted national community. It is irrational as in the case of Nidal Hassan's massacre of thirteen soldiers in Ft. Hood, and the apparent intention to massacre at least thirty more; and as in the IRA bombing in Enniskillen on 08 November 1987. One of the major problems of these instances of the massacre of the innocents is that such terrorism has provoked costly and deadly wars in the 21 century. A nation's prosecution of war, sending off its youth to officially endorsed slaughter of its own innocents, always comes down to child sacrifice, provoking one to wonder how that is morally superior to suicide bombings or terrorism. To Richard Bernstein's similar argument against moral absolutism Abraham responds by rejecting situational ethics in the case of terrorism and declaring it, like rape, absolute evil. He enjoins us not to lose either nerve or verve in setting things right against the arbitrary irrationalism of the slaughter of innocents. He declares there are specific responses demanded by terrorist acts: 1) care of the dead and wounded, 2) repair of the material and psychological damage to the victims, 3) creation of security systems that prevent further terrorism, and 4) changing the cultural background music. Abraham argues that the theological tunes of religion have been the background music at Enniskillen, Ft. Hood, the 9/11 attack on the WTC, both Gulf Wars, the unresolved conflict in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and now in Mali. These religious drivers are the main music that must be changed.Terrorism forces us to think deeply about drawing lines between the civilized and uncivilized behavior of nations, radical movements, and individual dastardly deeds. The more think about it the more difficult it is to draw a line between what we call terrorism in their tragic acts, and what they call terrorism in our warring response. …" @default.
