- W2600178123 abstract "Scandals and Scoundrels: Seven Cases That Shook the Academy Ron Robin. Berkeley: University of California, 2004. 277 pp. $i9.95.Scandals and Scoundrels is a book about failure: The failure to conform, the failure to follow conventions, the failure to act honestly or ethically. Some of these failures were, to be sure, inadvertent or laced with good intentions, but in the eyes of peers, and the public, they were acts of blatant disregard for what most academics consider to be correct action. The lesson to be learned here is simple: If we act unethically, we may get caught and if we do, then there is a price to pay. The problem is that the price is negotiable: The higher one is in the academic hierarchy, the less it costs. The undergraduate will be severely punished, the whistleblower will su∂er dramatically, but the superstar will be slapped on the wrist and soon forgiven. Indeed, though some peers demand real, retributive justice, most immediately excuse, forgive, and defend: How long can we hold a grudge for mere plagiary or deception? This volume is not just a collection of seven incisive and detailed case studies. Ron Robin commences with a comprehensive overview of the subject and indicates that he does not believe that academics are more dishonest than they were in the past; the ostensible increase in cases is due to broader media coverage. He also insists that the dishonest act is often less important to peers than an ancillary infraction of accepted disciplinary conventions. The case studies then unfold enthrallingly, even to a reader who is familiar with them. Interestingly, none of them deal with recent highly publicized instances of scientific misconduct such as the Breuning or Cell/Baltimore debacles. Here instead we find Stephen Oates (plagiary), Michael Bellesiles (fabrication and distortion), Joseph Ellis (deception), Margaret Mead (self-deception), James Neel and Napoleon Chagnon (infecting of indigenous people and collusion), Rigoberta Menchu (fabrication and deception), and Alan Sokal (falsification and deception). All of these were often scrupulously covered in the popular press, but Robin reminds, compares and contrasts, clarifies, and extrapolates so fully and incisively that the whole is something more than the sum of its parts. His most startling observation is that the perpetrators were castigated less for their plagiary or fabrication or deception, but rather because they broke ranks with their academic (and less celebrated) peers. For example, Oates (and Stephen Ambrose) overstep the boundaries of scholarly discourse and commodify, popularize, and even dramatize history; Bellesiles dared to confront those in power; and in the Neel and Chagnon debacle, the fate of the Yanomami was less important than the disagreement between two anthropological modalities. …" @default.
