- W2600178804 abstract "Laughter is often seen as a spontaneous reaction. But from a pragmatic point of view, laughter can also be employed as a conscious strategy that aims to discredit an adversary. Used as a weapon by a master of language, be it a poet, a philosopher, etc., a nasty remark creates laughter in the audience, reinforcing the identity of the speaker while destroying his opponent. Anthologies of witticisms are often compiled ex post facto to create lists of mockeries and unite them without considering the context of their first utterance. On the other side, deprecating humor is sometimes the unifying theme of a text. With this in mind, we would like to reread the Silloi by Timon of Phlious, from a double perspective. The Silloi will be considered as a complete work composed by a sceptic who turns with polemical intentions to the resources of comic language, particularly nominal composition and play on words. We will also read the Silloi through the eyes of Diogenius Laertius, who read and mentioned them many times, and whose doxographical work can be considered a serious version of Timon’s Silloi." @default.
