- W2600193585 abstract "SHEEHAN, Thomas. Making Sense of Heidegger: A Paradigm Shift. Lanham, Md.: Rowman & Littlefield, 2015. xx + 349 pp. Cloth, $105.00; paper, $34.95--As the title suggests, Thomas Sheehan aims in his book to bring about a fundamental shift in the interpretation of Heidegger's as a whole. Two basic claims frame Sheehan's new paradigm. First, he argues that Heidegger's corpus is marked throughout by a single thought, namely, the ivhence of being. Second, Sheehan argues that Heidegger always had a single answer to this question, albeit variously formulated: early on as the clearing (die Lichtung, Da-sein), and later on as appropriation (Ereignis, Da-sein). Together, these two claims amount to a new paradigm because they move the emphasis of Heidegger's dominant thought from the meaning of being to the meaning of being, and they counter the idea of any radical turn in Heidegger's thought. For Sheehan, we must read Heidegger as a phenomenologist from start to finish, for he was always primarily concerned with the meaning of being and the one to whom--the place where--that meaning shows up. Among the many virtues of the book, one that stands out is Sheehan's patient and sustained reading of some notoriously difficult passages in Heidegger. Several examples include his close readings of difficult passages on temporality, the place of logos or die Rede in the ontological structure of Dasein, and the meaning of Ereignis. Also largely helpful, even if sometimes belabored and clumsy, are Sheehan's proposals for new translations of key words. Here he often usefully highlights Heidegger's attempts to capture Greek valence in the strange language he sometimes deploys. Finally, Sheehan provides helpful resources for interpreting Being and Time. For instance, he gathers into one place all the promissory notes sprinkled throughout Division I and shows how they play themselves out through the rest Heidegger's thought, even though Division III was never completed. Much of Sheehan's work here is immensely clarifying; several of his remarks have already made their way to the marginalia of this reviewer's copy of Being and Time. Methodologically, the reader should be warned that the book tends to swing between two extremes. On the one hand, Sheehan often gives high altitude views of Heidegger's project. On the other hand, he tends to get bogged down in highly technical issues, which are of interest only to Heideggerian scholars. These two projects each have their own merits; some people will want to bring the picture of Heidegger's into focus, while others will want to know the chemical composition of his brushstrokes, so to speak. Sheehan's book gives the big picture, but also tries to detail the brushstrokes, and this oscillation makes for a somewhat choppy read. …" @default.
