- W2600235578 abstract "IntroductionThis essay looks at vignettes of the academic career of Eric Williams during the decade immediately preceding his break with the Caribbean Commission (called the Anglo-American Caribbean Commission from 1942 to 1946) in 1954. During this period the young scholar was firming up his historical philosophy and so he sought to educate himself by reading widely, assiduously collecting all kinds of historical and literary works and making extensive contacts with persons and organizations that could be of assistance. There were other factors that pushed him forward in this quest for knowledge, especially the constant need to prepare teaching materials for his classes at Howard University, where he taught from 1939 to 1948. As he became increasingly involved with the Anglo-American Caribbean Commission from 1943, it was necessary for him to delve more deeply into the world of the bibliophile and researcher, since so little had been written about the Caribbean and everyone wanted to know everything in a hurry. During this period, therefore, he was not only a vigorous researcher but also an intellectual activist, presenting fresh research to eager audiences in North America and increasingly in the Caribbean. He believed, as he told a student leader at McGiIl in 1945, that such preparation of the mind was necessary for the urgent task of reconstruction that lay ahead in the Caribbean. In specific terms, this article looks at Williams's fruitful association with the Schomburg Center for Research in Culture (located in New York], to which he donated a copy of the manuscript of Capitalism and Slavery. In 1954 he also directed that copies of the Caribbean Historical Review be sent there. The Schomburg experience of 1944 formed the basis of a useful week that he spent at McGiIl with West Indian students in 1945; this is another area examined in the article. A third section deals with Williams's efforts at disseminating knowledge of the Caribbean through his association with Caribbean collections in the region and abroad, his writing of history and his encouragement of others to do so. The final section of the article looks at the categories of items in the Eric Williams Memorial Collection at St Augustine, giving a general idea of its richness and its continuing relevance to scholars with a Caribbean interest. In 1951 Eric Williams (1911-1981) was assisting the Social Science Research Center at the University of Puerto Rico in the establishment of their Caribbean collection. have an excellent library, he wrote, as he offered the resources of this library towards the Puerto Rican purpose.1 Unlike most bibliophiles who are wary of lending pieces from their collection (for good reasons), Williams appeared to have gained enormous pleasure in sharing the treasures of his vast collection. Some seven years earlier a young Trinidadian physiotherapy student at McGiIl University had expressed her great satisfaction regarding Williams' generosity:Dear Bill,Thank you for Black Boy and other books you left me. I have always, all my life considered the gift of a book, a more precious and beautiful possession than anything else. Mossy is reading the book at present and I'm glad too because I'd be tempted to neglect my work.2Williams had a deep and abiding passion for books and for the learning and empowerment that could be derived from them. Equally, it can be said that he was totally unselfish in sharing as widely as possible any piece of writing he considered interesting. One month after his letter to the physiotherapist Wilma Cameron (see below), he was in Montreal inspiring a host of Caribbean students as he talked of books and of the importance of their Caribbean history as they prepared themselves to return to their homelands. It was this love for books that propelled the youthful scholar to engage so extensively in research on Caribbean history and to make such history available through collecting Caribbean works and later writing books and articles that were published widely. …" @default.
