- W2600360861 abstract "Purpose of the study: The wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD) may be considered for patients who are at transient high risk of sudden arrhythmic death. Arrhythmia detection in WCDs is performed with four electrodes placed circularly in the chest garment. This unipolar-like detection might increase the risk of electromagnetic interference (EMI) during accidental exposure to a standard airport handheld metal detector (AHMD) and could prompt inappropriate shock delivery in patients with WCDs. The aim of this study was to investigate WCDs exposed to a standard AHMD for EMI. Method used: Single center investigation. A test person (corresponding author) equipped with a WCD (LifeVest® model 4000, ZOLL, Pittsburgh, PA, USA) was exposed to a standard AHMD (model PD140, C.E.I.A., Viciomaggio, Italy) at the Munich airport in Germany, after permission from the local aviation authorities was obtained. The first test protocol consisted of a “real-world” setting with a security agent wiping the AHMD over the body of the test person in a timely manner, the second is a “worst-case” setting with the security agent holding the AHMD statically for 30 seconds in proximity to the different electrodes of the WCD. Detection of ventricular tachyarrhythmia was verified by the appearance of an acoustic or a vibration alert of the WCD. In addition, ECG recording was performed through the activation of the WCD response button. The ECG recordings were retrieved on the ZOLL server and screened for potential artifact sensing generated by EMI. Summary of results: In January 26th 2015, the healthy test person (male, 38 year old, BMI 19.9 kg/m2) underwent the different AHMD exposure settings. No acoustic or vibration alerts occurred. Exposure of the WCD to the AHMD didn't prompt any arrhythmogenic ECG trigger. Analysis of the ECG recordings didn't reveal any artifact sensing. Conclusion: The WCD was safe in the context of exposure to a standard AHMD. Although artifact sensing and inappropriate shock delivery didn't occur, different AHMDs have to be investigated to generalize these findings." @default.
