- W2600405214 abstract "Censorship and Silencing: Practices of Cultural Regulation Robert C. Post, editor. Los Angeles: Getty Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities, 1998. ISBN 0-89236-484-X (paper). This extensive discussion and investigation of censorship is the result of an elaborate collaborative study project carried out by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Getty Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities, and the Humanities Research Institute of the University of California. Although the term is mentioned only once (in footnote on p. 167), in effect, this book describes how so-called political correctness has altered studies of censorship. editor, Robert C. Post, observes, in his introductory remarks, that with feminists now joining forces with fundamentalist Christian leaders in campaigns against pornography, a remarkable disintegration of traditional political alignments has been taking place (1).The book is divided into three major sections. Part I concerns The Repressive State, with essays by Richard Burt, Ruth Gavison, Lawrence Douglas, Debora Shuger, and E. S. Burt. Part II relates to The Tutelary State, with writings by Frederick Schauer, David Wasserman, Sanford Levinson, and George Marcus. And Part III discusses The Egalitarian State, and includes works of Judith Butler, Rae Langton, Leslie Green, and Wendy Brown.Specific subject matter that is discussed is varied and far-reaching, ranging from censorship of literature in the past (with case study of Baudelaire's Les bijoux), to Holocaust denial, public funding of the arts, pornography, hate speech, peer review, and even Challenges to Western Liberal Thought. And, as Judith Butler points out (in Ruled Out: Vocabularies of the Censor), discussion of specific censorship cases (such as those found in this book) presupposes more general theory of the subject of power. In fact, this overview of power would seem to give framework, or point of reference, for the other essays of specific nature, and its inclusion is an indication of the commendable manner in which the editor has assembled and organized the book's contents.Another favorable aspect of the book is direct debate and exchange of ideas, as exemplified by the essays of Rae Langton and Leslie Green on the subject of pornography and the subordination and silencing of women. Such debate allows the reader not only to have better idea of the specific content of diverse points of view, but also to get an appreciation of how deeply-felt some of the issues are.The frontispiece consists of photograph of Toppled statue of Stalin, Hungary, 1956. This photograph is shown again within the text of Sanford Levinson's essay, The Tutelary State: 'Censorship,' 'Silencing,' and the 'Practices of Cultural Regulation,' which comments on the naming, removal, and destruction of public monuments. …" @default.
