- W2600454759 abstract "INTRODUCTIONShyness is a common but little-understood emotion. Shyness is not a mental disorder. Common sense indicates that Shyness is a behaviour pattern characterized by inhibition in some situations. Shyness may be defined experientially as discomfort and/or inhibition in interpersonal situations that interferes with pursuing one's interpersonal or professional goals. It is a form of excessive self-focus, a preoccupation with one's thoughts, feelings and physical reactions. Situational shyness involves experiencing the symptoms of shyness in specific social performance situations but not incorporating it into one's self-concept. Shyness reactions can occur at any or all of the following levels: cognitive, affective, physiological and behavioral, and may be triggered by a wide variety of arousal cues.According to various statistics, around 40 to 50 percent of the people (and sometimes more) are involved in shyness. Shyness leads to lowered self-esteem and decreased self concept (D'Souza, 2005), increased fear reactions among adolescents and college students (D'Souza et al., 2006; D'Souza, 2007), decreased levels of happiness (Sreeshakumar et al., 2007), increased maladjustment among college students (D'Souza, Ramaswamy, Rangaiah, 2008). It was also observed that shy adolescents require specific guidance in educational and social areas (D'Souza, Urs, and Jayaraju, 2008). Shyness is not just one or two symptoms but an all-encompassing collection of characteristic that manifests itself in the mind, body and behavior of shy people (D'Souza, 2005).Regarding large number of the shy students and relationship of shyness with other various problems like anxiety and depression and its negative influence, applying effective methods to reduce shyness seemed to be necessary. The lack of such method will increase the negative effects on shy students especially on their personality and social communication. The key to converting shyness into something positive is to develop life skills that will diminish the effect or impact of such a feeling or condition in our life. The present study adopted Individual and Group Life Skills training to reduce the shyness among adolescents.METHODParticipantsParticipants were selected through screening of more than 500 adolescents for shyness. Only those adolescents who had high levels of shyness were considered for the present study. The researcher selected 96 shy adolescent students and divided them into 3 groups (32 each), LSTI and LSTG and control group and in each group there were equal number of male and female adolescents were randomly distributed.MEASURESShyness Assessment Test (D'Souza, 2006).The shyness assessment test for adolscents was developed by D'Souza (2006) of University of Mysore. It consists of 54 items and requires the subject to indicate his/her response by marking Yes, or No. or can't say. The items in the test pertain to three domains of shyness- Cognitive/Affective, Physiological and Action oriented. The reliability index ascertained by split half (odd-even) method and Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the scale as a whole were found to be 0.735 and 0.812 respectively.PROCEDUREThe entire procedure consisted of 3 phases: Screening/Pre test, LST Intervention and Post test.Phase IScreening/pre test: In the first phase, the researcher administered the shyness assessment test to a large sample (more than 500). Only those participants who had high degree of shyness and had shown willingness to the investigation were selected for the study. The main author selected 96 adolescents having high degree of shyness (81 and above), 48 boys and 48 girls. Further, those 96 students were randomly divided LSTI and LSTG and control group.Phase IILST Intervention: After the selection, treatment was given to subjects (individually and group) for 8 session for 60 days. After the introduction, the researcher explained about the LST programme. …" @default.
