- W2600456020 abstract "Abstract Philosophers of language have considered the semantics of aesthetic judgements. Some have adopted contextualist semantics while others have adopted relativism. The essays in this volume consider whether contextualism and relativism provide satisfactory accounts of the semantics of aesthetic judgements. Certain factors, seldom taken into account by philosophers of language, suggest that both standard semantics for aesthetic judgements may need to be revised or even replaced. Many philosophers have assumed that aesthetic judgements behave like judgements that employ predicates of personal taste (such as ‘tasty’ and ‘delicious’) but there is reason to believe that aesthetic judgements and judgements that employ predicates of personal taste require distinct semantics. Some philosophers have also been insensitive to the distinction between substantive aesthetic judgements and aesthetic verdicts: the philosophy of language literature has focused on aesthetic verdicts. (Substantive aesthetic judgements attribute thick aesthetic predicates, such as ‘serene,’ ‘balanced,’ or ‘tragic’ to aesthetic objects. Aesthetic verdicts attribute thin aesthetic predicates, e.g., ‘great,’ ‘beautiful,’ or ‘ugly’ to aesthetic objects.) Relativism and contextualism also have trouble accounting for the intuition that some aesthetic disagreement is not faultless. It also seems to make sense for people to say that something is aesthetically valuable but that they do not like it, or that something is aesthetically impoverished but they like it. Some contributors argue that versions of contextualism can accommodate these features of aesthetic judgements, while others hold that relativism can. Others suggest a reconsideration of aesthetic realism." @default.
