- W2600790010 abstract "We read with great interest the reanalysis of a nationwide autopsy study by Hugen et al., who evaluated the correlation of primary tumour location (PTL) with distinct metastatic patterns in colorectal cancer patients. For instance, liver and lung metastases were more frequently observed in patients with left-sided colorectal cancer (LC), whereas peritoneal involvement was more often seen in patients with right-sided cancer (RC). The authors suggest that differences in the metastatic patterns based on PTL might at least partially explain the differences in survival between LC and RC as liver and lung metastases are potentially curable with resection. In contrast, peritoneal involvement is associated with poor survival, even when treated with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Distinct metastatic patterns in colorectal cancer patients based on primary tumour locationEuropean Journal of CancerVol. 75PreviewWe read with interest the meta-analysis by Holch et al. regarding the importance of primary tumour location in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer for prognostic and predictive purposes [1]. The authors have performed a thorough analysis in order to summarise the available evidence from clinical studies on this issue. In an era in which genetic and molecular subtyping is rapidly evolving, there is an increasing interest of the oncology community in the relevance of primary tumour location in metastatic colorectal cancer [2].
