- W2600969595 abstract "In the Divina Commedia, Dante describes the process of conversion he experiences after he has arrived at the edge of a dark forest. This conversion has required gaining insight in the workings of evil, the process of purgation, and in the way love moves the universe. He keenly describes the various aspects of this process: the struggle to unmask the nature of evil and confront it (Inferno), the confrontation with the virtues of Mary and the beatitudes of the Sermon on the Mount (Purgatorio), and the implications of the unification with God (Paradiso). In the end, it is clear that Dante’s conversion is an all-encompassing affair that will take a long time. One of the remarkable themes in the process is the notion of provedenza, providenza of provvidenza, In this contribution, I study the exact meaning of this concept, through five subsequent steps. First, (1) I will describe the narrative of the heaven of Mars. Next, (2) I consider Dante’s ideas on the role of fate or fortuna and afterwards (3) discuss his vision on provedenza. Then (4) the focus is on the relationship between descent and finally (5) I reconsider Dante’s critique of life in thirteenth century Florence. All this leads to the conclusion that Dante has to arm himself with provedenza rather than allow himself to be led by fortuna with her whims and caprices. Belief in provedenza will focus the attention on the way and the life that Christ proposes. Arming himself with provedenza means following in Christ’s footsteps, even if this leads to conflict with some. Through this argumentation, Dante holds up a mirror showing the reader what the road of conversion is he may follow." @default.
