- W2601053548 abstract "Sometimes history enters into a film and transforms it, thereby defining the “cinematographic forms of history.” This paper examines two recent examples in which history intrudes to unsettle a film: Cache (2005), a French film by Austrian director Michael Haneke, and La Question humaine (2007), directed by Nicolas Klotz and Elisabeth Perceval. In Cache, historical violence – rooted in the events of October 17, 1961 and the treatment of French Muslims of Algerian origin in mainland France – impinges on the narrative. In La Question humaine, also set in contemporary Paris, the history of the Nazi exterminations gradually infiltrates the internal survey that a human resources manager is carrying out in his company, challenging both his personality and his profession. Neither Cache nor La Question humaine can, strictly speaking, be called a “historical film.” However, they are undeniably films about history. Within a polemical context, these films are informed by certain cinematographic forms of history (the palimpsest, the spectral effect, the police report), which are analyzed in this paper." @default.
