- W2601242677 abstract "An Analytical Report Assignment-Identifying the Use of Social Media by Business FunctionsSocial media is ubiquitous in our society and at work. The generation sitting in college classrooms today grew up using social media and now need to adapt how they use social media for work. Nontraditional students also sit in our classroom; while they may have had work experience, they also need to learn how to use social media tools for work. International students in our classes may or may not have experienced social media tools depending on how much control their country's government has over internal and external communications. No matter how diverse the population is in the classroom, social media is another communication tool for all to learn to use in a professional environment.Social media continue to grow as a major channel of communications with customers promoting the company brand. According to Altimeter Group's (Solis & Li, 2013) data on the status of social business, 78 percent of the companies responding have a dedicated social media team to serve the entire company or division. The core team roles include social strategist, content strategist, training manager, web developer, social media manager, and social analyst. Starting in 2013, these teams focused on the following three priorities: content marketing, developing ongoing dialog and engagement with customers and listening to customers, and providing direct customer support through the social channels (Solis & Li, 2013). Additionally, about 38 percent of the respondents have or are formalizing social media training (Solis & Li, 2013).Social media is powerful and won't be disappearing from the communications scene. It is present not only in business but in politics, entertainment/media, and social/charitable causes. People find their mate using social media. Companies struggle to identify their return on investment using social media; however if a company doesn't use social media, within five years the business most likely close (Qualman, 2011, p 254).Anyone born after 1980 is referred to as a digital native. (Palfrey, 2008) Digital natives now in our classrooms process information differently for the longand short-term. Digital natives pick up bits and pieces of news and information; you could say they graze on information gathering (Palfrey, 2008). These natives like discovering knowledge rather than listening to a lecture; therefore, having them find information, evaluate credibility of the sources they use, and organize that information into an acceptable business document is an ideal approach allowing these students to discover and learn (Jukes, 2010).There are several software tools that can be used to measure your social media influence (Cooper, 2011). Some companies want their employees to have a certain score that demonstrates their influence or use of the tools (Young, 2013). Research by Wildfire (2012) identified that 80 percent of users will try new things based on friends' suggestions, 42 percent share negative experiences with brands/products, and 32 percent will not buy certain products because of negative customer experience.Tapscott mentions that technology creates new styles of communication and interaction, the internet produces new styles of playful learning, and work and social life also require new competencies. While Palfrey refers to the current generation of students as natives, Tapscott refers to them as Net Geners; their preferences for learning and working are through collaboration as they can communicate fast and frequently (Tapscott, 1998).Report preparation is something that students have been doing throughout their high school studies. The Net Geners are good at finding information online and paraphrasing or attempting to paraphrase to make the report meet the prescribed number of words or pages. In fact, the generation's learning preferences are quite different from many educator's preferences. …" @default.
