• W2602425766 abstract "A set of interconnected studies are being performed within theBecva River catchment to fulfill the aims of the Euro-limpacsproject (GOCE-CT-2003-505540) funded by EU 6th Frameworkprogram. The Becva River catchment is characterized by flyschgeology resulting in a highly variable flow regime. Most of thelowland part of the Becva River is regulated (as well as themajority of the other large rivers in the Czech Republic), buta catastrophic flood in 1997 caused the partial destruction ofthe canalization at several parts of this river. Due to a newapproach to the river management some of these parts have beenmaintained in that more natural status (and were not newlyregulated). Within these stretches the main channel has beenbroadened, the lateral connectivity has been restored and newhydromorphological structures (gravel bars, side arms that arepartially fed by ground water, etc.) along with new habitatsfor the floodplain biota have emerged. Ecological relationshipsare studied at various spatial scales (microhabitat,mesohabitat, stretch) within the highly dynamic riverfloodplain ecosystem and selected processes are monitoredseasonally. The main topics of the study are: a) seasonaldynamics of the river floodplain, especially shifts of itshydromorphological structures (riffles, pools, gravel bars,etc.) associated with erosion-sedimentation processes b) studyof the taxonomical, ecological and age structure ofmacroinvertebrate communities in relation to the environmentalconditions. In these ecological studies our attention is givenprimarily to the influence of temperature regime, substratecharacteristics, hydraulic conditions and associated foodsupply. c) habitat preferences of particulate species d)colonization and recolonization patterns of themacroinvertebrate communities, concentrating on periodicallyflooded habitats (effect of timing and duration of high flows)and habitats where the hydraulic conditions are again gettingsuitable to the macroinvertebrates after high flow episodes(mid-channel habitats, flooded for the whole year but highlydisturbed during the high discharges)." @default.
