- W2602691900 abstract "Adolescents are considered as the most productive members of the society, due to their physical and intellectual capacity. Global and societal changes have influenced the lives of adolescents and these changes are likely to affect them in the future as well. The rapid social change, consequent upon modernization, urbanization, globalization and the media boom, has made the lives of adolescent people, their expectations, values and outlook very different from those of older generation. Life skills enable individuals to translate knowledge, attitudes and values into actual i.e. what to do and how to do it. Life skills are that enable individuals to behave in healthy ways, given the desire to do so and given the scope and opportunity to do so. Life skills pay an important role in the promotion of mental well-being. The promotion of mental wellbeing contributes to our motivation to look after ourselves and others, the prevention of mental disorders, and the prevention of health and behaviour problems (WHO, 1997).According to WHO, life skills may be defined as abilities for adaptive and positive behavior, that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday Life skills are the for adaptive and Positive behaviour that enables the individual to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life. WHO (1997) included decision making, problem solving, creative thinking, critical thinking, effective communication, inter-personal relationship, self awareness, empathy, coping with emotions and coping with stress in the list of life skills. Inevitably, cultural and social factors will determine the exact nature of life skills. For example, eye contact may be encouraged in boys for effective communication, but not for girls in some societies, so gender issues will arise in identifying the nature of the life skills for psychological competence. The exact content of life skills education must therefore be determined at the country level, or in a more local context. However, deserbied in general terms, life skills are being taught in such a wide variety of countries that they appear to have relevance across cultures. Effective acquisition and application of life skills can influence the way we feel about ourselves and others, and equally will influence the way we are perceived by others. Life skills contribute to our perceptions of self-efficacy, self-confidence and self-esteem. Life skills therefore play an important role in the promotion of mental well-being. The promotion of mental well-being contributes to our motivation to look after ourselves and others, the prevention of mental disorders, and the prevention of health and behaviour problems.Life skills are defined as non-academic abilities, knowledge, attitudes and behaviour that must be learned for success in society. Life skills, being skills of adaptive and positive behaviours, enable individuals to enhance psychosocial competence life skills are found to affect academic success, peer relationship, family relationship, employment, and extra curricular and leisure activities (Sharma, 2003; Slicker et al., 2005; Gambill et al., 2008; Gooding, 2009) contextual factors influencing the development of life skills appear to include not only experiences within the school curriculum and the guidance and counseling programs but also talent development opportunities, and family and peer relationships (Yuen et al., 2010; Bouck, 2010). Life skills arc accepted as valuable and worthwhile, can effectively influence the development of the positive attitude towards life (Papagcargious & Kavga, 2009; Sallee, 2007; Jone & Lavallee, 2008; Forneris et al.,2010).It was found that adolescents enrolled in the life skills training program showed life skills gain over time, and gain on specific life skills (Weissbery et al., 1989; Zabin et al., 1986; Wong et al., 2005; Anderson & Moore, 2009). …" @default.
