- W2602946387 abstract "Interdisciplinarity is widely believed to be one of the main sources of scientific creativity. It has been hailed as a driving force behind scientific discoveries and the emergence of new theories. Many contemporary initiatives seeking to promote interdisciplinarity – for instance the big EU research programs or the establishment of new university departments and research institutions – have been justified by the assumption that it is the most efficient way to achieve really new and useful knowledge and meet grand societal challenges. But the idea that interdisciplinarity is the key to creativity is also under suspicion of being a cliche or even a myth. Some see the current strong drive towards interdisciplinary research as motivated more by political interests than by any real concern for scientific quality, or as based on wishful thinking rather than substantial evidence for the alleged positive effects. There can hardly be any serious doubt that there is some positive relationship between interdisciplinarity and scientific creativity. The large number of scientific breakthroughs having taken place in interdisciplinary settings or involved theories or findings from more than one discipline cannot be a mere coincidence. But it has too often been left unclear precisely what the relationship between interdisciplinarity and scientific progress is supposed to be. Which kind of interdisciplinarity is conducive to which sort of creativity or progress? What exactly is it that interdisciplinarity is doing? I shall try to shed more light on these questions, without pretending to resolve them definitively. The issue is extremely complex, and the significance of particular cases and extant empirical studies remains debatable. But I will argue that interdisciplinarity is indeed a prominent factor in scientific creativity, while acknowledging that it has its risks and drawbacks as well." @default.
