- W2604169187 abstract "Diabetes mellitus causes considerable suffering and incurs considerable medical costs. Diabetes can be managed by careful monitoring of blood glucose and timely delivery of exogenous insulin, but even with excellent adherence to treatment, patients may be affected by numerous complications associated with this disease. This is because delivery of exogenous insulin coupled with glucose monitoring cannot provide the level of glucose control normally provided by endogenous pancreatic β cells. In addition, a subset of diabetic patients lacks awareness of hypoglycemic events, which are associated with a risk of loss of consciousness. Whole pancreas and islet cell transplantations have been performed for these patients as β cell replacement therapies, but they carry potential risks of surgical complications, lifelong immunosuppression, and graft rejection. In addition, the number of human donors is limited. To overcome these problems, a bioartificial pancreas is being developed using a tissue engineering approach. In this approach, to protect the cells from the immune system, encapsulation of a semipermeable membrane and inner islet cells eliminates the need for immunosuppressive agents, and the use of insulin-producing cells generated from animal or human cells may solve the shortage of donors. The development of a suitable encapsulation material or device, together with the smooth mass production of cell sources, is the key for developing a successful bioartificial pancreas. Various promising approaches for addressing problems related to immune defense and cell sources have recently been studied in efforts to provide effective, long-term treatment for diabetes." @default.
