- W2604175649 abstract "IntroductionThe concept of management is through organization and coordination of the activities of an enterprise in accordance with certain policies and in achievement of clearly defined objectives. This can be difficult to understand on many levels, although with practice and gaining experience it is much easier to feel comfortable with the process and procedures that are involved in managing difficult but talented employees.Within this paper, the goal is to present the reader with a better understanding about management, what new managers can potentially do to learn the habits and trends of those they supervise, things older managers can do to manage a younger employee and ways for managers to supervise and motivate employees that have a habit to be more difficult to oversee. To understand how to motive a difficult employee, a general understanding regarding the types of difficult employees a manager will have to work with on a day-to-day basis, what habits each type of employee will exude and the potential actions that a manager can use to ensure the employee is working up to their potential. With the use of many outside sources, this paper will name and describe many types of difficulties that employees may be present in the professional setting of an office or other workspace. From there, the paper will give tips for dealing with the variety of difficulties that each employee may potentially bring to a work group. These suggestions will start with the least invasive and progress until the final option being termination of the difficult employee; also, there are tips that a manager can do to ensure the environment is as stress free as possible, in order to allow for each employee to work at their full potential. From the reading, How to motivate your Problem People in the Harvard Business Review, there are four case studies that are reviewed. These cases describe and inform the reader about the trials and tribulations that a manager may experience, to include some of the underlying issues that may not be present when the manager has to make a decision about the future of the employee.Managers have a difficult time dealing with the varieties of personalities that employees bring to the work group, thus managers have to develop ways to adapt and use each employee's skills in the best interest of group to continue working at their most productive levels.Review of LiteratureManagers quickly learn that there may be several employees that cause trouble for them. In addition, there are several things that managers need to think about when dealing with one of these employees. One thing that should always be paid attention to is the type of employee that is being dealt with. There are several different types of employees and each type has their own characteristics that may cause problems for other people. Usually problematic employees can fit into one of 7 major categories: the seducer, the backstabber, the iceberg, the tardy employee, the offloader, the violent/bully and the martyr2.The seducer category is usually defined by people who purposely try to build work friendships and allegiances in order to benefit their own personal career. They may often try and praise their target into favorably thinking of them so the next time a promotion comes along you will first think of them. Seducers can often have what is called a diva attitude as well2. This attitude is characterized by somebody who craves attention. They may do things in order to draw attention to themselves. By drawing attention, they may distract others from important work causing a decrease in productivity.Backstabbers are problem employees that may take credit for work that they did not do2. They may also try to discredit work that fellow coworkers have done in order to feel a sense of superiority or even try to get them fired to gain their position. Backstabbers may often be found easily because of their demeanor, many of them often get into power struggles with their managers because they do not like to be managed5. …" @default.
