- W2604710367 abstract "Common Mental Health Problems have been increasing world over since last few decades. A survey report documented that in Colleges and Universities Mental Health Problems are tremendously increasing (Gallagher, 2007). Hollingsworth (2004) through his study reported that the rise in severity and number of students increased by 30 to 50 percent over the past 10 years. Findings of the previous researches (Kitzrow, 2003; Pledge, Lapan, Heppner, & Roehlke, 1998; Soet & Sevig, 2006) support the existence of evidence that over the past several decades the prevalence and severity of Mental Health Problems among University Students has increased worldwide.Mental Health Problems are commonly triggered in University Students when they face any type of stress. However, it was also observed that some students have predisposition of existing Mental Health Problems. As these students have the pre-existing vulnerability but it is triggered due to some factors in the environment like exams stress, relationship breakup, and adjustment issues in hostels etc. (Hoover, 2003).An important predisposing factor is undoubtedly the age at which the University Students fall for development of mental illness. Research evidence explains the fact that the peak onset age for Mental Health Problems is earlier than 24 years the age when most of the students are attending University or Colleges (Kessler et al., 2007). In short University Students are at high risk while this time the developmental challenges of transition to adulthood occurs (Hunt & Eisenberg, 2010). The stresses associated with the transition to University add additional risk factors (Chemers, Hu, & Garcia, 2001; Montgomery & Cote, 2003). In addition, they may have to live away from home for attaining academic requirements, and it creates a new identity as a student (Scanlon, Rowling, & Weber, 2010).The key psychological models explain the concept of development of mental health problems according to their perspectives. Psychodynamic Model explains that the core of mental disorders are psychological. They fall in the unconscious mind and result due to failure of defense mechanisms. The childhood negative experiences are very important in this regard to determine the malfunctioning of mind. The Behavioral Model focuses on stimuli and reinforcing conditions that influence human behavior as normal or abnormal (Corsini & Wedding, 2008). The Cognitive-behavioral model asserts that mental health problems are result of cognitive errors or biases. It explains as how thought process can become distorted and cause maladaptive behaviors and emotions. According to this perspective dysfunctional thinking can lead to Mental Disorder if it is not corrected (Neale & Davison, 2001).The Humanistic model describes Mental Health Problems as an alarm that the individual is failed to reach his or her potential and that psychological growth has stopped. This model emphasizes good nature of humans and focuses on each individual's inherent capacity for responsible self-direction (Kadison & Digeronimo, 2004). Abraham Maslow provided informal counseling to his students in dealing with their personality issues. Maslow's theory stressed on the importance of hierarchy of needs (Maslow, 1998). Although different models explain causes of mental disorders but Maslow proposed developmental model which emphasizes on human motivation and need attainment being the reasons of students' problems for which they seek assistance. This model postulates that mental health problems originate as a consequence of prolonged unmet needs. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a popular conceptual framework and it has an important influence on counseling and education particularly in the context of students' needs and behaviors (Chapman, 2008).Other predisposing factors of mental health problems include genetic, biochemical and social (Rutten, Hammels, Geschwind, Pishva, & Wichers, 2013). …" @default.
