- W2604776796 abstract "Motivation is one of the most critical variables in improving productivity, revving up performance, gaining sustainable competitive advantage and attaining organisational objectives at minimal cost. It is a rather subtle, means which is often relegated to the periphery and left to play second fiddle to other techniques like formal authority, charisma, rewards and punishment: It is indeed a key factor in management which is often overlooked. The importance of motivation in any organisation in Zimbabwe and the world over cannot be over-emphasised. The tight liquidity crunch that the country is going through creates greater demand for public services against a diminishing revenue base. Motivation thus becomes an indispensable way of improving productivity with limited financial strain. Many theories have been propounded and research has been carried out on motivation. It is the apparent void in practical recommendations especially in the public sector that creates a platform for further research. This study was premised on assessing the practical use of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory in motivating employees at Masvingo Polytechnic. The study took careful consideration of the influence of individual differences of employees in applying the theory. In this light, the study used a deductive approach where a qualitative survey was carried out among employees at the said institution. The survey aimed at getting employee responses on what they felt were the best factors that motivated them as employees. The study revealed that motivation in general is an essential feature in enhancing productivity and that Maslow’s theory can be applied very well in motivating employees. It further exposed that the hierarchy is not cast in stone; employees on one level may have needs at different levels of the hierarchy." @default.
