- W2605390038 abstract "Purpose: A limited number of studies have evaluated sex differences in prevalent and incident hand osteoarthritis (OA). We evaluated sex differences in prevalent and incident hand OA evaluating specific joints, ray, row and overall hand OA. Methods: We evaluated 3604 participants in the Osteoarthritis Initiative for baseline and incident osteoarthritis at the level of the joint, ray, row, and hand using xrays of the dominant hand, and examined differences by sex at baseline and 48 months. We defined joint OA as a KL grade > 2 in a joint. Ray and Row OA were defined as at least one affected joint in an affected ray or row. Hand OA was defined as at least one affected finger joint on two different rays excluding the thumb. Generalized linear mixed models adjusted analysis to account for clustering of joints, within fingers and hands and additional adjustments for age, race, body mass index were performed and prevalence and incidence rates determined. Results: Women had greater prevalence for hand OA and thumb base OA than men at baseline. (see table) The CMC and STT and DIP in the index and middle finger and PIP in middle finger had greater prevalence rates in women compared to men. Thumb, index and middle ray OA but not 4th and 5th rays were of greater prevalence in women compared to men. OA in the DIP but not MCP or PIP rows showed the same increased prevalence in women compared to men. No sex difference in incidence rates for either joint, ray, row or hand OA were found. (data not shown.) Conclusions: Cross-sectional analysis reveal greater prevalence of thumb, DIP OA especially on the index and middle finger in women compared to men, but no difference in MCP, PIP row OA prevalence. Why pincer grasp associated OA is more prevalent in women needs further evaluation.Tabled 1Prevalent Joint, Ray, Row and Hand OA by SexCategoryMenWomenP-valuePrevalence%%JointThumb/CMC/STT21.9/18.526.3/24.40.04/0.03Index/DIP/PIP/MCP18.7/5.6/6.830.1/11.8/5.00.01/0.09/0.21Middle/DIP/PIP/MCP12.9/8.3/5.821.5/15.4/3.10.04/0.03/0.14Ring/DIP/PIP/MCP10.2/7.0/0.516.4/12.8/0.40.06/0.08/0.51%th/DIP/PIP/MCP23.1/8.5/0.326.4/11.1/0.40.08/0.12/0.82RayThumb/Index/Middle/Ring /5%th30.2/23.5/19.2/13.6/26.335.9/33.5/28.0/20.3/27.00.01/0.0007/0.02/0.06/0.64RowThumb base/DIP/PIP/MCP29.2/34.7/15.5/7.134.5/41.3/20.6/3.90.02/0.03/0.07/0.17Hand26.934.40.001 Open table in a new tab" @default.
