- W2605898911 abstract "Editor'studies of the incidence and prevention of major complications after anaesthesia, such as pain, nausea, sore throat, or hoarseness, have been reported.1Kuwamura A Komasawa N Kori K Tanaka M Minami T. We conducted a prospective observational study that surveyed various non-specific symptoms other than the major postoperative complications (wound pain, nausea, hoarseness, and pharyngeal pain). Ethical approval was obtained from the Research Ethics Committee of Osaka Medical College, a major teaching hospital of the prefecture. We queried 557 patients (243 men and 314 women) who underwent general (489 patients) or spinal anaesthesia (69 patients) by asking an open-ended question, ‘Do you have any uncomfortable symptoms other than pain, nausea, hoarseness, and pharyngeal pain?’ Postoperative examination was performed after postoperative day 1 [average 5.6 (4.1 SD) postoperative days]. Forty-one patients complained of non-specific uncomfortable symptoms. Airway-related minor complications included lip numbness (six patients), lip bleeding (two patients), and dysgeusia (one patient). Postoperative analgesia-related symptoms included numbness and strange feelings (four patients), pain around the epidural catheter insertion site (two patients), and drowsiness from continuous fentanyl administration (two patients). Spinal anaesthesia-related complications included numbness of the lower limb (two patients). Position-related complications included numbness of the upper limb (four patients) and shoulder pain (two patients). Catheter-related complications included nasal bleeding associated with gastric tube (two patients), pain around venous line insertion site (one patient), and pain on urination associated with a urethral catheter (four patients). Neuropsychiatric complications included hallucination associated with delirium (five patients), shivering (two patients), pain around the back of the eye (one patient), and temporary aphasia (one patient). These uncomfortable symptoms lower postoperative patient quality of life after anaesthesia. However, sufficient predictive or preventive methods of these non-specific symptoms have not been developed. Anaesthetists should focus not only on major complications but also minor ones to improve postoperative patient outcome and quality of life. None declared." @default.
