- W2605916256 abstract "Marine mammal carrion contains a large amount ofnutrients and energy of potential value to terrestrialand marine scavengers, but its impact on coastalhabitats has not been studied. This study aimed toprovide a detailed documentation of the fate of twogrey seal (Halichoerus grypus) pup carcasses, oneplaced on the shore of Little Cumbrae and one at adepth of 6 m off Great Cumbrae, Firth of Clyde, and arecord of the changes in the carcasses and thesuccession of scavengers using these resources. Thecarcasses were monitored using time lapse and/ormotion-activated cameras. On the shore, greatblack-backed gulls, juvenile gulls and ravens fed onthe carcass and there was a distinct shift in therelative proportions of the bird groups feeding overthe period observed. Herring gulls spentsignificantly less of their time at the carcass feedingthan other birds, while lesser black-backed gullswere not observed scavenging despite beingcommon on the island. Over the six week period ofobservation, more than 90% of the carcass wasconsumed. However, the deployment of the carcassdid not influence the spatial and temporaldistribution of the scavenging birds. Theunderwater carcass was monitored for two periodsof two weeks and one week respectively. In the firstperiod Echinodermata (dominated by Asteriasrubens) had the highest maximum number ofindividuals at the carcass, followed byActinopterygii (fish) and Malacostraca (crabs).Numbers of fish and starfish dropped in the secondperiod, while crustaceans were present in similarnumbers as previously. The daily mass loss of thecarcasses was 0.56 and 0.07 kg day-1 in theterrestrial and marine ecosystems respectively. Both the terrestrial and marine experimentsdisplayed evidence of bacterial activity. In theabsence of any previous detailed study, the presentwork provides important insights into the roles ofseal carcasses in coastal systems, especially in anera when carrion from fisheries discards willbecome increasingly unavailable." @default.
