In todayrs economic climatenmaximising operational and financial performance is paramount. Coal loss minimisation is atnthe forefront of modern day mining, with developments in technology rock mass behaviour isnbecoming more predictable. nThe aim of this project thesis is to design chain pillars for LW207 panel at Cook Colliery innBlackwater, QLD. The objective was to optimise coal recovery and increase the potential profitnmargin. Previously this has been an issue as irregular pillar geometries were designed tonaccommodate for a Continuous Conveyor Haulage (CCH) system. Various design methodsnadopted worldwide were investigated for consideration of chain pillar design. nThere were four methods analysed in this report with focus on the UNSW and ALTS methodnas deemed most appropriate, each of these approaches are formed based on three steps. Firstly,nit is important to calculate expected pillar load including, stress from overlying strata, abutmentnloads from longwall advancements and any additional local or regional stresses. Secondly, thenstrength of the coal pillars must be analysed and finally an appropriate safety factor must benselected. Numerical modelling was completed using phase 2 with the geological and geotechnicalninformation provided from site. Four different scenarios were considered and from this alongnwith the ALTS computation a simple graphical means was created to calculate the optimal chainnpillar width once a reasonable factor of safety was chosen. A cost analysis was then performed and it was concluded that there was significant financialnbenefit from reducing the current chain pillar width of 40m down to 25m despite thenrequirement for additional roof support. However, to validate these findings additional researchnand data would need to be investigated.
