- W2606423869 abstract "Research has failed to confirm a link between urbanization and violence. However an association may develop in the years ahead as uncontrolled urban growth interacts with factors such as economic deterioration and reduced state capacity to control political challenges. The developing world offers examples of three forms of urban violence: political communal/ethnic and criminal/anomic. Even when state repression of oppositionalists succeeds in restoring order there is a decline in the governments legitimacy and capacity to rule. Key factors that have the potential to interact in a synergistic manner with urban growth to produce violence include: protracted economic crises and the resultant conflicts between elites and further marginalization of the poor erosion of networks of reciprocity that once provided a spirit of cooperation and social solidarity increased ethnic cleavage insistent demands for democratization from mobilized sectors the growing strength and reach of organized crime and greater ease of access to weapons of destruction. Karachi the largest city in Pakistan offers a case example of the way these forces can converge to produce violent upheaval. Here the inability of the state to respond to the conflicting demands of ethnic and religious minorities drawn to the city in response to industrialization and the green revolution of the 1960s reduced state legitimacy strengthened ethnic and class-based loyalties and created openings for organized crime. It can be hypothesized that in the years ahead dashed expectations and feelings of relative deprivation will emerge not only among dissatisfied rural migrants but also among young urban-born job and status seekers whose needs cannot be satisfied in a period of economic stagnation." @default.
