- W2606462744 abstract "IntroductionSince the 1980s the rural-to-urban migrant population in China has increased dramatically. According to the 6th China National Census conducted in 2010, the total number of rural-to-urban migrants reached about 260 million, with an 81% increase compared to the 5th China National Census (in the year 2000). 26.7% of the total migrants are youth aged between 15-24 years (1-2).Previous studies conducted in other countries have showed that there is a relation between the movement of rural-to-urban population and an increased risk of HIV/AIDS infection around the world. These studies indicate that migration has emerged as a risk factor for the spread of HIV/AIDS, and demonstrated that migrant population are highly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS infection. Furthermore, the increasing proportion of HIV/AIDS cases amongst migrant people is related to cross-cultural variation in people's ideas, partner choice, sexual behaviors etc. (3-6).Over the past decades the number of Chinese young people engaging in premarital sexual relationships has sharply increased, with a high percentage not taking the necessary precaution to prevent unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of HIV/AIDS. The prevalence of sexual intercourse among young people out of school is higher than those in school (23.3% versus 7.2%) (7). A study from 4 cities in China showed that 38.7% of the young unmarried female migrants investigated had a previous induced abortion, with a prevalence of reproductive tract infections (RTIs) and STDs of 56.1% and 9.7% respectively (8). Other research found that 35.1% of male migrants suffered from reproductive health problems, such as phimosis, cryptorchidism, and 17.4% of the female migrants experienced unwanted pregnancies and suffered from RTIs such as vaginitis, cervical erosion, pelvic inflammatory disease (9). In China, the epidemic of HIV/AIDS is experiencing fast growth. The official estimated number of persons infected with HIV exceeded 780,000 by the end of 2011. Sexual transmission has become the most important transmission route of HIV infection in China (10). More than 80% of new infections were caused from both heterosexual and homosexual transmission in 2014 (11). Researchers who have explored the trends in the HIV/AIDS epidemic among the Chinese migrant population have found that rural-to-urban migrants have a strong impact on the continued spread of HIV/AIDS in China. The migrant population acts as an important bridge spreading HIV/AIDS from high risk groups to the general population (12).The regular use of condom and/or other contraceptive methods have been acknowledged as effective measures to prevent HIV/AIDS infections and unwanted pregnancies (13, 14). But many studies also suggest that the decision for young people to use condoms and/or other contraceptive methods for unwanted pregnancy or HIV/AIDS prevention is the result of different factors including age, gender, cultural values, sexual orientation, and personal attitudes towards contraceptive use. Other relevant factors are also the use of alcohol and drugs, the duration of intimate relations, peer norms, knowledge of HIV/AIDS and awareness on preventing unwanted pregnancy (15-17). Previous studies applied the Health Belief Model (HBM) to explain and predict the practice of condom or contraceptive use among young people (18-20). Hall (21) reviewed the contraceptive research describing HBM-guided between January 1966 and February 2011 and confirmed that the HBM was the most comprehensive social cognitive framework including perceived threat of pregnancy(e.g., knowledge, beliefs), modifying and enabling factors (e.g., demographic, psychological and social aspects etc.) as well as contraceptive costbenefit analysis (e.g., knowledge of and beliefs about efficacy etc.) can guide modern contraceptive behavior research and practice.Young migrants are a complex and diverse group. Due to their temporary urban household registration, they do not have access to social welfare benefits available to urban residents, such as housing, education, long-term employment contracts and health care systems and are, therefore, more vulnerable to health problems including HIV/STDs infection (22). …" @default.
