- W2606728737 abstract "Censorship: A World Encyclopedia Derek Jones, ed. London, Chicago: Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers, 200i. $450.In almost 3,000 pages spanning four large volumes, Censorship: A World Encyclopedia attempts to cover every major censorship issue in every part of the globe throughout human history. That this seemingly impossible task is largely successful is a tribute to editor Derek Jones and a host of prominent contributors. Jones explains that this ambitious project was in i99i when the British television company Channel 4 screened the controversial series Banned, which contained 70 hours of programming exploring censorship past and present from all over the world. This was followed by a special supplement on censorship published in the New Statesman, co-edited by Jones and Steve Platt. From this early vision and energy came the idea for an encyclopedia of censorship. To the American reader or researcher, the global scope of the work may seem to deny the United States its rightful place at the center of the world's secrecy and censorship, but in the end we must acknowledge the universality of this virus. Having said that, we should identify a few of this work's omissions in America's illustrious history of information control, the first of which is no fault of the editor. With a 200i publication date, the encyclopedia just missed the spate of repressive laws, regulations and executive orders that followed the September ii, 200i, terrorist attacks on New York City. In the name of anti-terrorism, censorship and surveillance have overtaken American society to a degree that clearly defines a new era whose federal excesses dwarf those of the Cold War period. What a shame that Derek Jones and company could not have tilled such fertile ground.Among the handful of other topics that seem to have been overlooked in this vast new work is the U.S. Atomic Energy Act and the broad range of scien- tific censorship that flowed from it, including the bizarre notion of information that is born classified. Another significant topic that seems to be missing is the entire structure of classified information in the United States, what is often called national security information. This massive edifice of secrecy that even the U.S. government admits has grown out of control is an appropriate subject for any work on censorship. And finally, my bias as a retired librarian leads me to note the absence of any mention of the notorious Library Awareness Program, the FBI's lengthy program of library surveillance and information control. …" @default.
