- W2607185605 abstract "In this chapter we take pause to consider something troubling about our efforts in preventing terrorism. We don’t always take our security seriously. If we were serious about preventing terrorism we wouldn’t routinely ask low-valued, low-paid workers to protect some of our most vulnerable sites from people who are determined to spread a political message through violence. Security guards play a vital security and social role and they do so whilst working for little pay, with little social status, and often in terrible conditions. Security guards in the popular imagination are the subject of jokes. They are often framed as losers, failures and employment for unmanly men. We challenge this image in this chapter and argue that security guards may be our best chance for surviving should the unthinkable occur." @default.
