- W2607805955 abstract "The insect immune system and the innate immune system of mammals share many functional and structural similarities. As a result of this a range of insects are used to assess the virulence of microbial pathogens or measure the efficacy of antimicrobial compounds and generate results that show a strong correlation to results obtained using mammals. A number of Lepidopteran insects (i.e., moths and butterflies) are now widely used in biological research and generate results faster and in a more ethically acceptable manner than using conventional mammalian screening systems. This article will highlight advantages of using larvae of Bombyx mori, Manduca sexta, Spodoptera exigua, and Galleria mellonella for assessing the virulence of fungal pathogens or measuring the in vivo activity of antifungal drugs. Procedures for using larvae of G. mellonella are described. The used Lepidopteran larvae offer many advantages to the researcher and will reduce the need to use mammals in many cases." @default.
